There are many symbolic representations and stories of bears across the planet. Clan of the bears brings together different aspects of cultural heritage of bears, their wisdom and innocence.
Most people associate bears with the Native American Tradition’s and the lands of Canada and The United States. Bears are in fact one of the most widespread clan animals within traditional America, however story and relationships to these animals also stretch into many other traditional cultures within Ancient Europe and Asia.
History intimates that dating back over 50 000 years bear cults existed within Europe with bears worshipped and revered.
Europe an cultural heritage prevailed with the worship of the bear goddess, with artefacts found in Switzerland and Ireland proving of a long held cultural relationship to humans. The Bear has also played a prominent role in the creation mythos of Korea and Ancient bear ceremonies were performed amongst the now near deceased Ainu people of Japan.
Bears have captured the imagination and are symbolically prevalent within human cultural traditions because they demonstrate a whimsical connection to the natural world and healing oneself, through their close relationship to nature practices of solitude and observation. They are family to human and communicate to us the importance of the cycles of nature and living with the seasons, they echo an innate wisdom to observe the world in which we live within.

JAGUAR OF THE LILLY

This jaguar is enjoying swimming in the river and shows the versatility of this cat to move and inhabit both land and water environments. The incorporation of lilies draws from Mayan iconography and refers to a transforming form that is fluid and representative of fertility. The inclusion of Lilies within Mayan Iconography may be indicative of practices that occurred with this plant to reach or attain the form of Jaguars and communicate with ancestors.
Traditional references to Jaguars through reliefs, carvings and ritual within human cultures of the America’s stretch back thousands of years and communicate the importance of religious edifice and the complexity of relationships that humans shared with Jaguars.
Jaguars are the largest cats of America; they commonly will position themselves close to water sources and large slow flowing rivers, The agility of Jaguars to move on land and water and dwell in trees illustrates some of the reason why ancient people’s worshipped these animals and saw them as the lord of their dominion.

The World Turtle is moving through space and refers to the many creation myths and references to The Milky Way as birthing life and the beginning of formation around the world. These myths place the turtle as the central figure bringing life and carrying the potential for Earth upon its back. References to the turtle and creation myths can be found within Hindu mythology, Akupara is a tortoise who carries the world on his back and one Avatar form of Vishnu is the giant turtle Kurma who assisted in the churning of the Sea of Milk.
Within China AO is a turtle found in the world’s oceans during the creation and was used in the formation of Earth, while Native America and Central American stories reference turtles and the integral role they carried in the creation of life.

Clifford Mahooty is a portrait created with the permission of the late Zuni elder, honouring not only his likeness but his profound role as an educator and keeper of cultural knowledge within the Zuni community. Clifford Mahooty was a respected member of the Kachina Priesthood, the Galaxy Medicine Society, and the Sun Clan, and was widely recognized as a wisdom keeper of Zuni history. This portrait marks the beginning of an ongoing series dedicated to Indigenous elders-those who serve as vital links to ancestral wisdom and tradition, ensuring the continuity of cultural knowledge for future generations. Clifford passed away in 2022, was renowned for his outspoken advocacy and his efforts to share Zuni creation stories, myths, and spiritual teachings with the wider world. His teachings offered insights into the position of humanity within existence, emphasizing the importance of cultural continuity and spiritual understanding to the cosmology of stars and Earth
